The Geography of Finance

Geography and finance are inherently linked. Most countries have their own currencies. Neighboring countries often share and sometimes war over natural resources. Strong geopolitical ties can lead to sophisticated trade agreements, while regional conflicts can bring about macroeconomic upheaval.

Look no further than Russia's invasion of Ukraine in early 2022 to see the potential economic havoc wrought by war. Russian faced wave after wave of international sanctions, while areas of Ukraine were decimated, leading to a local financial crisis. As a result, several peer-to-peer lending companies suspended their activities in the region, leaving investors wondering whether they would ever see their capital, let alone any returns.

Similarly, the United Kingdom's Brexit referendum was a controversial proposal many feared would destabilize the whole of Europe, while others believed it was the only way to secure long-term economic prosperity for the UK.

Regulatory measures are yet another example of the regional nature of finance. For example, the United States requires investors receive “accreditation” by proving they have a net worth of over $1,000,000 and an annual income over $200,000. This effectively precludes 95% of US citizens from participating in US-based peer-to-peer lending mechanism. Europeans, meanwhile, need only present proof of citizenship and a valid bank account.

Support for local businesses is another geo-economic driver. Many investors seek to bolster the local economy, by investing in projects close to home. This is particularly valuable when investing in a real-estate development project, as it allows the investor to visit the location in question, assess the seriousness of the initial offer, and track the progress of the investment.

As the financial world continues to globalize, you'll find more overlap between countries and regions, but geography will always influence finance, and the more informed you are the better.
What if I don't live within the country in question?

The rules and regulations governing international investment are complicated, and user agreements differ from site to site. That being said, most European P2P sites are open to all EU residents, and investors with a valid EU bank account. The United States is far stricter, and certain US residents (such as residents of Puerto Rico and Guam) cannot invest on certain P2P sites.

P2P Platforms are Available in the Most Widely Spoken Languages

Most European P2P sites offers a few languages in addition to the lingua franca. English, German, and Spanish are the most common languages found.

American Investors Can Obtain Accreditation

Americans seeking to participate in the US P2P market must be accredited. To receive accreditation, you must be able to demonstrate a net worth in excess of $1,000,000 (individually or joint) not including your primary residence. In addition, you must be able to demonstrate you’ve earned $200,000 (or more) for each of the past two years—or that you and your spouse have earned more than $300,000.

In 2020, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) added a few more options for accreditation, including for those holding a Series 7 (or similar) license, individuals who have demonstrated extensive knowledge of finance and investment, and certain entities with values exceeding $5,000,000. The details can be found on the SEC’s website.
